Cryopreservation (Egg / Sperm / Embryo / Ovarian Tissue)

Secure preservation of reproductive potential through the freezing of oocytes, sperm, embryos, or ovarian tissue. Cryopreservation enables patients to safeguard their fertility for future use—whether for personal, medical, or long-term family-planning reasons.

What is Cryopreservation (Egg/Sperm/Embryo/Ovarian Tissue)?

Cryopreservation is a medical technique through which cells—such as oocytes, sperm, embryos, or reproductive tissues (ovarian or testicular tissue)—are frozen and safely stored for later use. It is an essential fertility-preservation option for individuals who wish to safeguard their reproductive potential for personal, medical, or social reasons.

At Genesis Athens, advanced cryogenic technology ensures optimal post-thaw survival rates for reproductive material. The process is carried out under highly controlled laboratory conditions by experienced embryologists, in full compliance with rigorous international quality standards.

Cryopreservation is commonly recommended before medical treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or reproductive surgeries, as well as for patients undergoing assisted reproduction procedures (IVF) who wish to preserve additional embryos for future cycles.

When patients decide to pursue pregnancy, the appropriate procedures for thawing and embryo preparation are performed.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to Cryopreservation (Egg/Sperm/Embryo/Ovarian Tissue)

Every treatment at Genesis follows a structured, personalised process designed to support you medically and emotionally at every stage. From the first consultation to post-treatment care, we are here to guide you with clarity, expertise, and compassion. While each treatment has its own clinical steps, the journey always begins with understanding your individual needs and building a plan that gives you the best possible chance of success.

Cryopreservation (Egg/Sperm/Embryo/Ovarian Tissue)
You will meet with a fertility specialist to review your goals, medical background, and suitability for cryopreservation. A full fertility evaluation will be performed.
If you are planning to freeze oocytes or embryos, you will undergo a course of hormonal stimulation—provided your health condition allows it—followed by oocyte retrieval. For embryo cryopreservation, the collected oocytes are fertilised in our laboratory using sperm from either the partner or a donor. In the case of ovarian tissue, a surgical procedure is required to remove a portion of the ovary, typically performed under anaesthesia.
For sperm preservation, a semen sample is collected and processed. In cases involving severe male pathology (for example, obstruction of the seminal ducts or azoospermia), the reproductive material can be obtained through a surgical procedure such as a testicular biopsy.
The samples are rapidly frozen through a process called vitrification and safely stored in our facility. Each sample is carefully labelled and continuously monitored to ensure long-term security.
When patients decide to attempt conception, the cryopreserved biological material will be thawed and used in the appropriate fertility treatment (IUI, IVF/ICSI, Cryo-ET).

Eggs, sperm, embryos, and tissue can remain frozen for many years without losing viability. There is no fixed limit, but storage duration is reviewed regularly with your consent.
With modern vitrification methods, the survival rate of frozen eggs, sperm, and embryos is very high. Most retain their quality after thawing when handled properly.
Yes. Many women choose to freeze eggs to preserve fertility during their most fertile years, giving them more flexibility for the future.
Ovarian tissue freezing is generally used in young patients—often before cancer treatment—or in cases where egg retrieval is not possible. Your doctor will advise based on your case.
