In Vitro Maturation (IVM)

A fertility treatment that allows eggs to mature outside the body in a laboratory setting, offering a gentler alternative to traditional IVF. IVM is particularly suitable for women who cannot or should not undergo full hormonal stimulation, providing a safe and effective path to parenthood.

What is In Vitro Maturation (IVM)?

In Vitro Maturation (IVM) is a fertility treatment in which immature eggs are collected from the ovaries and matured in a controlled laboratory environment before fertilisation. Unlike conventional IVF, IVM does not require extensive hormonal stimulation, making it a suitable option for women at risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) or those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

At Genesis Athens, the collected eggs are matured under carefully monitored laboratory conditions and then fertilised using In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) techniques. The resulting embryos are cultured and transferred to the uterus, offering a safer and less invasive path to conception.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to In Vitro Maturation (IVM)

Every treatment at Genesis follows a structured, personalised process designed to support you medically and emotionally at every stage. From the first consultation to post-treatment care, we are here to guide you with clarity, expertise, and compassion. While each treatment has its own clinical steps, the journey always begins with understanding your individual needs and building a plan that gives you the best possible chance of success.

Blastocyst Transfer
Your fertility specialist will assess whether IVM is a suitable approach for you based on your medical history, hormonal profile, and ovarian reserve.
You will either receive a short course of low-dose hormones or no medication at all, depending on your protocol. The goal is to collect immature eggs directly from your ovaries.
Immature eggs are retrieved via a short procedure under light sedation. The eggs are then matured in our laboratory over the following 24–48 hours.
Once the eggs have matured, they are fertilised using ICSI or IVF. Embryos are then cultured for several days before selection.
A healthy embryo is transferred to the uterus during a simple, pain-free procedure. Remaining embryos can be frozen for future use.
A blood test is performed approximately two weeks after transfer to check for pregnancy.
