What is In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)?

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is an advanced fertility treatment in which eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory environment to create embryos. The healthiest embryos are then transferred to the uterus to achieve pregnancy.

IVF helps overcome many fertility challenges, including blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, male factor infertility, ovulation disorders, or unexplained infertility.

At Genesis Athens, IVF is performed using state-of-the-art technology and individualised treatment planning. Depending on your needs, it may include ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), PGT (Preimplantation Genetic Testing) Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A), Structural Rearrangements (PGT-SR), Monogenic Disorders (PGT-M), or Cryopreservation to optimise outcomes.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

Every treatment at Genesis follows a structured, personalised process designed to support you medically and emotionally at every stage. From the first consultation to post-treatment care, we are here to guide you with clarity, expertise, and compassion. While each treatment has its own clinical steps, the journey always begins with understanding your individual needs and building a plan that gives you the best possible chance of success.

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
We begin by understanding your situation. During your consultation, we will discuss your fertility history, review what has and has not worked, and explore your treatment possibilities.
You will begin a personalised course of hormonal medication to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. We will monitor your response with ultrasound scans and blood tests.
When the eggs are ready, they are collected during a short, minimally invasive procedure under sedation or light anaesthesia.
Your eggs are fertilised with sperm in our laboratory. The embryos are closely monitored for several days as they develop.
A carefully selected embryo is transferred to your uterus using a gentle, painless procedure. This is done under ultrasound guidance for accuracy.
Around two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test will confirm whether implantation was successful.

F.A.Q.

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) F.A.Q.

We know that starting fertility treatment often comes with many questions — about the process, the risks, and what to expect. In this section, we address some of the most common concerns to help you feel more confident and informed.

If you do not see your question here, our team is always available to provide further guidance, personalised to your specific situation.

The procedure itself is not painful. Egg collection is done under sedation, and embryo transfer is typically painless. You may experience mild cramping or bloating during stimulation.
In most cases, one or two embryos are transferred to reduce the risk of multiple pregnancies. The number depends on your age, medical history, and embryo quality.
Yes. If there are healthy embryos not transferred during your cycle, they can be frozen and used in future treatments.
IVF is a safe procedure, but as with any medical treatment, there are risks. These may include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), multiple pregnancy, or emotional stress, all of which we monitor and manage closely.
We will review your results in detail, offer emotional support, and explore the next best steps—whether repeating treatment or considering alternative options.
Most patients are advised to wait one full menstrual cycle before beginning a new IVF cycle, but this depends on your recovery and emotional readiness.
