Gamete/Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT/ZIFT)

Alternative assisted reproduction techniques that offer a more natural fertilisation and implantation environment by placing either eggs and sperm (GIFT) or fertilised zygotes (ZIFT) directly into the fallopian tubes. These options are ideal for select patients seeking a less conventional pathway to conception.

What is Gamete/Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT/ZIFT)?

Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) and Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT) are assisted reproductive treatments that help couples achieve pregnancy by placing either eggs and sperm (in GIFT) or fertilised eggs (in ZIFT) directly into the fallopian tubes.

These procedures are similar to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) but differ in where fertilisation and early embryo development take place. In GIFT, fertilisation occurs inside the body, while in ZIFT, the embryo is created in the laboratory before being transferred into the fallopian tube.

At Genesis Athens, GIFT and ZIFT are performed using advanced laparoscopic techniques to ensure optimal precision and safety. They may be recommended for couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or those who prefer a more natural approach to conception.

Genesis Athens follows the ESHRE Guidelines on Assisted Reproductive Technologies to ensure each procedure meets the highest standards of safety, ethics, and medical care.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to Gamete/Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT/ZIFT)

Every treatment at Genesis follows a structured, personalised process designed to support you medically and emotionally at every stage. From the first consultation to post-treatment care, we are here to guide you with clarity, expertise, and compassion. While each treatment has its own clinical steps, the journey always begins with understanding your individual needs and building a plan that gives you the best possible chance of success.

Blastocyst Transfer
Your doctor will review your medical history, examine tubal health, and determine whether GIFT or ZIFT is appropriate based on your diagnosis and preferences.
You will undergo hormone therapy to stimulate the ovaries and produce multiple eggs, followed by close monitoring to track follicle development.
Eggs are retrieved via laparoscopy under anaesthesia. Sperm is collected and prepared for immediate use.
GIFT: Eggs and sperm are placed directly into the fallopian tubes. ZIFT: Eggs are fertilised in the lab, and the resulting zygotes are transferred into the fallopian tubes.
You will rest for a short period after the procedure. Our team will monitor your recovery and schedule your pregnancy test.
A blood test is performed approximately two weeks after the transfer to confirm pregnancy.

GIFT places eggs and sperm directly into the fallopian tubes before fertilisation. ZIFT places fertilised eggs (zygotes) into the fallopian tubes after fertilisation in the lab.
These procedures may appeal to patients who prefer a more natural fertilisation process or have religious or ethical concerns about traditional IVF.
They are used less frequently today due to the success of IVF, but they remain viable options in specific cases, especially where tubal function is intact.
Yes. Both procedures involve laparoscopy under anaesthesia to access the fallopian tubes, unlike IVF which uses a catheter-based embryo transfer.
Success rates can be similar in selected patients but may vary depending on age, diagnosis, and the number of embryos transferred.
ZIFT typically involves fresh embryos, but frozen embryo protocols can be developed depending on your treatment plan and medical considerations.
