Fallopian Tube Recanalization

A procedure that aims to restore the natural patency of blocked fallopian tubes. Tubal recanalization offers selected patients the possibility of conceiving naturally by reopening the path for egg and sperm to meet.

What is Fallopian Tube Recanalization?

Tubal recanalization, also known as tubal surgery or fallopian tube blockage treatment, helps restore fertility by reopening the natural passage between egg and sperm. When one or both tubes are obstructed, natural fertilisation cannot occur. This procedure uses minimally invasive techniques — such as hysteroscopic, fluoroscopic, or laparoscopic guidance — to access and open the tubes, improving the chances of natural conception.

At Genesis Athens, we evaluate each case individually to determine if tubal recanalization is appropriate. Our team uses advanced diagnostic imaging and microsurgical techniques to safely restore tubal function when possible — offering a natural alternative to IVF for suitable patients. A hormonal analysis may also be performed to assess hormonal balance before planning the procedure.

Our approach follows the latest recommendations from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) guidelines on reproductive surgery.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to Fallopian Tube Recanalization

Every treatment at Genesis follows a structured, personalised process designed to support you medically and emotionally at every stage. From the first consultation to post-treatment care, we are here to guide you with clarity, expertise, and compassion. While each treatment has its own clinical steps, the journey always begins with understanding your individual needs and building a plan that gives you the best possible chance of success.

Fallopian Tube Recanalization
You will meet with a fertility specialist to discuss your medical history and undergo diagnostic testing, such as hysterosalpingography (HSG) or sonohysterography, to confirm tubal blockage.
Your specialist will determine the best technique (hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, or fluoroscopic recanalization), explain the procedure, and guide you through the consent process.
The procedure is performed under sedation or anaesthesia, depending on the method. A small catheter or instrument is used to clear the blockage and restore tubal patency.
You will usually go home the same day. Mild cramping or spotting may occur, but recovery is quick and well tolerated.
A follow-up appointment will assess results and confirm tubal function. If the tubes are open, you may begin trying to conceive naturally or receive further guidance on fertility planning. If conception does not occur naturally, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) may be recommended as the next step.
