Embryo Biopsy

A precise laboratory technique used to collect a small number of cells from an embryo for genetic testing. Embryo biopsy is a key step in treatments such as PGT-A, PGT-M, and PGT-SR, offering valuable information about the health and viability of each embryo before transfer.

What is Embryo Biopsy?

Embryo biopsy is a highly precise laboratory procedure performed on embryos created through IVF to evaluate their genetic health before transfer. During the procedure, a few cells are gently removed — usually at the blastocyst stage — without harming the embryo’s development. The cells are then sent to an accredited genetics laboratory for analysis according to the required test type.

This testing allows genetic specialists to perform preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A, PGT-M, or PGT-SR) to detect chromosomal or genetic abnormalities that could affect embryo implantation or increase the risk of inherited conditions.

At Genesis Athens, all embryo biopsies are performed by an experienced embryology team following strict international safety and ethical protocols — ensuring optimal embryo viability, accurate results, and improved IVF success rates.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to Embryo Biopsy

Every treatment at Genesis follows a structured, personalised process designed to support you medically and emotionally at every stage. From the first consultation to post-treatment care, we are here to guide you with clarity, expertise, and compassion. While each treatment has its own clinical steps, the journey always begins with understanding your individual needs and building a plan that gives you the best possible chance of success.

Embryo Biopsy
Your fertility specialist and genetic counsellor will review your history and discuss whether embryo biopsy is recommended as part of your IVF treatment.
You will undergo a standard IVF or ICSI cycle. Fertilised embryos are cultured in our laboratory until they reach the blastocyst stage.
On day 5 or 6, a few cells are carefully removed from the outer layer of each blastocyst using a high-precision laser. The embryo remains intact and is immediately frozen to preserve viability.
The biopsied cells are sent to a specialised genetic laboratory, where they are analysed depending on the type of test requested (PGT-A, PGT-M, or PGT-SR).
Once the results are available, your doctor will guide you through the findings and help select the healthiest embryo for frozen transfer.
The selected embryo is thawed and transferred to the uterus in a gentle procedure. A blood test is performed approximately two weeks later to confirm pregnancy.

F.A.Q.

Embryo Biopsy F.A.Q.

We know that starting fertility treatment often comes with many questions — about the process, the risks, and what to expect. In this section, we address some of the most common concerns to help you feel more confident and informed.

If you do not see your question here, our team is always available to provide further guidance, personalised to your specific situation.

Yes. When performed by experienced embryologists, embryo biopsy is considered safe and does not impair the embryo’s ability to implant or develop.
Biopsy is usually done on day 5 or 6, when the embryo reaches the blastocyst stage. This allows for better accuracy and minimal disruption to the embryo.
No. Cells are taken from the trophectoderm, the layer that forms the placenta—not the inner cell mass that develops into the baby.
Embryos are frozen immediately after biopsy to preserve them while genetic testing is completed. This also allows for careful planning of the transfer cycle.
Only embryos that develop to the blastocyst stage and meet quality criteria are suitable for biopsy. Your medical team will assess which embryos are eligible.
No. In fact, when combined with genetic testing, embryo biopsy can improve success by helping transfer only embryos with the highest potential for a healthy pregnancy.
