Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A)

A genetic screening test that identifies embryos with the correct number of chromosomes before transfer. PGT-A supports healthier pregnancies, reduces miscarriage risk, and improves success rates — especially for individuals with previous IVF failures, miscarriages, or advanced maternal age.

What is Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A)?

Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A) is an advanced genetic screening method performed on embryos created through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). It detects chromosomal abnormalities that could cause miscarriage, failed implantation, or genetic disorders.

Embryos with the correct number of chromosomes (euploid) are more likely to result in a healthy pregnancy, while those with missing or extra chromosomes (aneuploid) may lead to implantation failure or miscarriage.

PGT-A involves an Embryo Biopsy, during which a few cells are gently removed at the blastocyst stage without affecting the embryo’s ability to develop normally. At Genesis Athens, state-of-the-art genetic screening technologies ensure the most accurate and ethical assessment possible, helping couples make informed decisions and improve IVF success rates.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A)

Every treatment at Genesis follows a structured, personalised process designed to support you medically and emotionally at every stage. From the first consultation to post-treatment care, we are here to guide you with clarity, expertise, and compassion. While each treatment has its own clinical steps, the journey always begins with understanding your individual needs and building a plan that gives you the best possible chance of success.

Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A)
Your doctor will explain the role of PGT-A, review your fertility history, and determine whether screening will be beneficial for your IVF plan.
You will undergo a full IVF or ICSI cycle, including ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and fertilisation. Embryos are cultured to the blastocyst stage.
A few cells are carefully removed from each blastocyst and sent to a specialised genetics laboratory for analysis. The embryos remain safely frozen while results are processed.
Your doctor will review the genetic findings and help you select the healthiest embryo for transfer based on chromosomal normality and quality.
A frozen embryo transfer is scheduled using the best available embryo. The process is gentle, painless, and performed under ultrasound guidance.
A blood test is performed approximately two weeks after embryo transfer to confirm pregnancy.

No. PGT-A reduces the risk of chromosomal abnormalities, but it does not screen for all genetic or developmental conditions. It significantly improves the chances of a successful pregnancy.
Yes. The biopsy is performed by experienced embryologists using advanced techniques. The risk of damaging the embryo is extremely low.
No. PGT-A is recommended in specific cases, such as advanced maternal age or repeated IVF failure. Your doctor will advise based on your history and embryo count.
Results typically take 1 to 2 weeks. During this time, embryos are safely frozen and stored in our laboratory.
While PGT-A can reveal the chromosomal sex of embryos, gender selection is only considered in cases of medical necessity, in accordance with local regulations.
In the right cases, yes. PGT-A can reduce miscarriage risk and increase implantation rates by ensuring only chromosomally normal embryos are transferred.
